Work (A Poem)

Work (A Poem)

An alarm sound rings familiar

Ever so slowly as you return

Awakened from an elsewhere

And flights in another dimension

You bid one story goodbye

Until the next opportune arrives

To dream and heal and release

During the shut eye of your life

Back in the third dimension

Are you a leaping grasshopper?

Springing from a mattress

Or a turtle glad for its shelter

From the overwhelm of life

The beat goes on regardless

That organ loyal since the start

There is work ahead, it murmurs!

And a job is just a job

Work is what happens amidst

Zoom meetings or elevator trips

A kind word or gesture

That can save a person’s life

So, regardless of your station

Remember who you really are

The mind not made an enemy

So the heart can direct the show

Until we return to our sleep

Another good day of “work”

And new dreams

To look forward to
